The Ellis County Commission on Dec. 17 approved a purchase order totaling $60,000 to buy vaccine inventory for 2025, clearing the way for the county health department to shift vaccine procurement and billing in-house.
Carrie McHugh, representing the health department, told commissioners the county plans to end a third-party vaccine contract in early January and begin ordering and billing vaccines directly. McHugh said buying vaccine in-house should allow the department to collect and retain revenues that previously flowed to an intermediary. She estimated the $60,000 procurement would provide roughly 2,300 doses across vaccine types (COVID, influenza and others) and said a 25% match requirement for some grant programs is met by capital set-aside funds.
County Administrator Darren Myers and McHugh indicated the purchase can be funded from Fund 16 (capital equipment) without tapping contingency funds and that earlier budget adjustments freed up capacity to assist other projects, such as the Victoria Community Coalition request. Commissioners voted to approve a combined PO to the vendor listed in the agenda packet (Sanofi was named in staff materials) and directed staff to finalize procurement and billing transition plans ahead of the 2025 budget cycle.
