Council thanks Da Vinci Center, Better Lives Rhode Island and urges support after polar-vortex response

The Providence City Council formally recorded a resolution expressing gratitude to the Da Vinci Center and Better Lives Rhode Island for setting up an emergency warming shelter during a polar vortex that brought below-freezing temperatures to the city.

The clerk read the resolution into the record, noting that the Da Vinci Center, under the leadership of Norma Gonzalez, opened its doors and that Better Lives Rhode Island, led by Paula Hudson, provided specialized support and staff coverage. The resolution said the center provided warm shelter to "as many as 50 people in a singular night and saving lives." The reading credited dozens of community volunteers and said the organizations' work ensured the safety of Providence residents during the extreme weather.

Several councilmembers followed with personal expressions on the floor praising the organizations' leadership and urging the city to go beyond words. One member said thanking the organizations was "not enough" and said the council should commit resources so small providers can continue life-saving work. Speakers highlighted 12-hour staff shifts and cited the local organizations' deep relationships with unhoused residents.

The council approved waiving the reading of the item and recorded the resolution in the meeting minutes. Council members also noted plans to present citations and take photos with representatives after the session.

The resolution does not specify funding amounts or a new budget allocation; council members called for further discussion about resource commitments to the organizations in future meetings.
