Council approves asbestos abatement contract for City Hall basement and other areas

City staff presented bids and recommended awarding asbestos abatement work at City Hall after an inspection found asbestos-containing floor tile in several areas.

Steven (Mr. Lang) reported the low base bid was $23,700 for basement areas, add alternate 1 was $7,100 for conference/finance areas, and add alternate 2 was $23,900 for the old engineering area, for a combined bid of $54,700. Staff said the total project cost including prior engineering and design work is about $60,000 and that the project budget is $100,000. Steven recommended awarding the base and both alternates to the low bidder. He outlined work sequencing and schedule: some admin-area work would be done Friday night into Saturday, and much of the basement would be sealed for about two weeks beginning the first week of January (staff cited Jan. 7 as a start target).

Council asked whether bathroom areas were included; staff answered that previously-removed tile meant bathrooms were not included in the asbestos scope. Council then approved the recommended award by recorded vote, 5–0.
