The Austin City Council voted to adopt the 2025 budget and to approve a tax levy for the coming year.
Tom, speaking for city staff, said the budget “will total $49,800,227, funded by LGA, tax levy, user fees, etcetera.” He also noted the tax-levy amount announced at the Truth in Taxation hearing: “it was approved on a 3 2 vote … to approve a tax levy of $9,800,000 for 2025.” The council then considered and passed a resolution adopting the $9.8 million levy by roll-call vote, 4–1, with Council member Baskin recorded as voting nay. Later, the council adopted the full 2025 budget by a unanimous recorded vote.
Why it matters: The tax levy and budget set the city’s revenue plan and spending priorities for 2025. Staff and council members told residents the funds come from multiple sources, including the local government aid (LGA) allocation, the tax levy and user fees, and emphasized that documents will be filed with county and state officials to finalize the rollout.
Supporting details: Tom told the council the city requests a resolution to adopt the levy and the budget after the Truth in Taxation process. Council discussion of the budget in the meeting was brief; no substantial amendments were offered on the floor. After passage, Tom said staff will “file documents with the county and the state starting tomorrow.”
What’s next: The council’s adoption completes the local approvals needed to begin implementing the 2025 budget; staff will proceed with required filings and routine budget execution steps.
