After a presentation from an American Legion representative detailing designs, local fundraising efforts and projected costs for an All Veterans Memorial in Lebo, Coffey County commissioners approved a $25,000 contribution from the Community Improvement Reserve Fund.
The presenter described a multi-year volunteer effort that yielded design renderings and local commitments, and estimated the total project cost at about $165,000. He told the board the group recently regained tax-exempt status and had started a brick fundraising program, grant applications and a planned community dinner and outreach to local philanthropic organizations. He also said local contractors and a neighbor near the site have pledged to pay for adjacent cement work and a mural.
Several commissioners voiced support for veterans while expressing concern about setting a precedent for county funding of local memorials and community projects. One commissioner proposed contributing half the requested amount; the motion to contribute $25,000 to the American Legion Post (Harold Spatz post name referenced in the request) was moved, seconded and approved with a final vote recorded by the chair as 3-0-1.
The county noted its contribution comes from the Community Improvement Reserve Fund and asked the presenter to provide updates as the project progresses. Commissioners suggested the group pursue matching grants and local philanthropic partners such as the Jones Trust and Emporia Community Foundation to raise additional funds.
