Atchison County approves culvert contract, moves ahead on Bridge RS290 paperwork

Atchison County commissioners voted Dec. 3 to move forward on roadwork contracts, approving a notice to award for a culvert replacement and signing paperwork for a scheduled bridge project.

Joe Snyder, the bridge superintendent, told commissioners King Construction of Oskaloosa was the sole bidder on the culvert replacement for project described in the transcript as "N Dot 5‑24.8," with a bid of $74,775. Snyder said the county has funding in a special bridge account and recommended awarding the contract to King Construction. A motion to approve the notice of award was made and seconded; the transcript records the outcome as "Passes 2 to 0." The county clerk and staff will complete the documentation to send to the contractor for signature.

Snyder also said the Bridge 290 project on 3 Fourteenth Road had been awarded to Evert Construction last week and that the contractor's performance bonds and project documents need signatures. Commissioners were asked to sign one county page while contractors and the project's engineer would sign the other copies. Commissioners moved to authorize the chair to sign the construction program for project RS290 dated 10/31/2024; the motion carried and staff will distribute signed copies, with additional contract and bond documents to be filed with project contacts.

Snyder said he will forward signed materials to Donald Schmidt (named in the record) so work can proceed. The superintendent also outlined schedule constraints for roadside tree removal and referenced required clearances and timelines associated with the bridge work.

What’s next: County staff will finalize signatures and return fully executed contracts and bonds to the project manager so work on culvert replacement and Bridge 290 can proceed.
