Coos Bay reappoints water board representative; city manager reports on tsunami response and Timber Cove progress

The City Council reappointed Councilor Matthews to the Coos Bay–North Bend Water Board for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2028, approving the reappointment by voice vote after the council confirmed his interest in continuing to serve.

City Manager Nicole briefed the council on a recent tsunami warning and subsequent evacuation. She said staff completed an internal after-action review, have begun outreach to partners including the Coos Bay School District, and have issued a short public survey about how residents learned of the event; 63 people had responded by the time of the meeting. Nicole said she will compile identified needs and that the city’s federal delegation has asked how to help; staff plans to prepare requests, including possible support for emergency operations center capacity.

Nicole also updated councilors about Timber Cove site work, including a culvert repair at Lindy Lane, and reported that a recent boardwalk extension at the Coos History Museum is nearing completion pending inspection. The museum kept the walkway closed pending permit release; staff said the inspection was expected the next morning and that barricades would likely be removed if permitted.

Councilors thanked staff for emergency work and for fast-tracking the Timber Cove development and other infrastructure projects. There was no vote associated with the manager’s report; the reappointment was the formal action taken in the same portion of the agenda.

What happens next: staff will finalize the after-action report, continue community outreach and return to council with specific requests for federal or other assistance if identified.
