Coos Bay staff outlines Front Street bike facilities; ODOT to study 101 & Market safety

Jennifer Wierstein (City of Coos Bay) said the original design estimate (excluding the 101 & Market intersection) was about $40,000; ODOT estimated $60,000 to design the 101 & Market intersection, putting combined design near $100,000, and preliminary construction estimates were approximately $325,000. Wierstein said ODOT indicated interest in installing bike facilities on the northern portion of Highway 101 and asked the city whether it would consider bike lanes in the downtown corridor.
Commissioners stressed pedestrian safety and urged staff to press ODOT on crossing improvements. One commissioner said the intersection is a multimodal safety concern and recommended carving out the Market-to‑Front crossing for earlier construction if possible. Staff said ODOT agreed to take a look at the intersection and would absorb investigation costs; staff will seek a schedule from ODOT when available.
What happens next: Staff will follow up with ODOT to obtain a schedule for investigation and share that timeline with the commission. The commission also advised consideration of design phasing and grant strategies to cover both design and construction.
