Coos Bay council enacts updated camping ordinance and approves best-practices guidance

Committee discussions considered state changes to unit limits; the final approach preserves a standard three‑unit threshold while allowing the city to conduct an internal review for proposals seeking larger numbers of units, with additional expectations for sanitation, restroom facilities and supervision.
Councilmember discussion recognized the ordinance’s complexity and approved an accompanying one-page best-practices policy intended to make compliance and application steps clearer for organizations. The council moved and adopted the ordinance as read; the clerk recorded that ordinance number 579 was duly enacted.
What it means: organizations that host camping on their property must meet sanitation and supervision standards; proposals to host more than the standard number of units will be evaluated through an internal review process. Council asked staff to circulate the best-practices application and guidance to prospective hosts.
