Coos Bay councilors voted to approve a financial-support agreement committing local opioid‑settlement dollars to ADAPT for operation of a sobering center.
Nicole (speaker 6) explained the funds arise from national opioid‑settlement distributions and are allowable for purposes that include the sobering center. She said Coos Bay received about $255,000 so far and that the city and county have coordinated parallel commitments; the county additionally is developing a lease for space within the county jail property. Staff noted one logistical hurdle: evidence-storage currently located where the sobering center would be must be relocated to a new secure facility before the center can open.
Council authorized the city manager to sign the agreement and thanked local volunteer committees and agency partners who have advanced planning. Staff said there is no immediate expiration of settlement funds, but that reporting requirements apply and some practical timing constraints exist as construction and equipment moves are completed.
