Harv, speaking for the Coos Bay Downtown Association, updated the City Council on the organization’s mission to enhance downtown quality of life and support businesses and community activities. The association described four Main Street focus areas: promotions (festivals and farmers markets), design/beautification, organization and economic vitality.
Highlights included longstanding events (Blackberry Arts Festival and Bay Area Fun Festival), a 24‑season farmers market that ranks highly among Oregon markets, and the addition of a Fourth of July event in the park. The association secured a $12,000 grant used to bring a portable stage for community gatherings and is partnering with Marshfield High School students on bicycle-rack design and installation.
Harv also discussed public-art initiatives (utility-box and wayfinding signage projects), two recent downtown cleanups, and concerns about whether QR-code-heavy wayfinding meets the needs of all residents. He said the organization plans to apply next year for a competitive Main Street revitalization grant with the goal of securing about $400,000 from the state to support downtown improvements and upper-floor housing projects.
Councilors thanked Harv and encouraged follow-up presentations on public-art themes and signage options.
