Coos Bay proclaims September 2024 as National Preparedness Month; city to host preparedness fair

Chief Anderson told the council that since 2004 FEMA has designated September as National Preparedness Month to encourage households and communities to prepare for emergencies. He emphasized reducing the impact of large‑scale emergencies by promoting self‑sufficiency (food, water, shelter and essentials) for roughly two weeks and urged residents to inventory belongings and review insurance for fire, flood, earthquake and other risks.
Chief Anderson also announced that, in partnership with Coos County Emergency Management, the city will co‑host a community disaster preparedness fair at Pointy Village Mall later in September, with multiple agencies available to answer preparedness questions. Council President Lucinda DeNovo read the proclamation declaring September 2024 as National Preparedness Month and encouraged residents to build home inventories and consult their insurance agents.
A council member moved to approve the proclamation; after a voice vote the presiding officer announced the motion carries.
