Shawnee Heights honors first-grade teacher Ben Eckleberry, a Kansas regional finalist

The Shawnee Heights Board of Education recognized Ben Eckleberry, a first-grade teacher at Tecumseh North, for his selection as the district teacher of the year and as a Kansas Teacher of the Year Region 2 finalist.
An introducer praised Eckleberry's dedication and impact on students and colleagues. Eckleberry told the board he and other finalists travel as a team for presentations and outreach organized through the Kansas Department of Education, and he described efforts to involve his first graders in outreach using a classroom "Flat Stanley" activity. He listed team members, recounted recent events (including presentations at KSU and EdRising in Bonner Springs), and said Shawnee Heights is scheduled for a team visit on Jan. 22.
"I'm very excited to kind of share out some of the very cool things that we have had the privilege to do as a Kansas teacher of the year team," Eckleberry said during his brief presentation.
Board members and attendees offered congratulations and invited the teacher to receive a certificate and photo; one board member said her daughter had Eckleberry as a teacher and praised his approach and rapport with students. The recognition segment closed with applause and a group photo.
The board's recognition does not create a district policy change; it is an honorific acknowledgment of Eckleberry's selection and outreach work.
