Board approves PHS cell-phone policy to take effect Jan. 1, 2024

The Pittsburg Board of Education approved an amended PHS student handbook policy restricting cell-phone use during class time and clarifying related procedures. On second reading, administrators and board members refined language on classroom definitions, headphone use (wired-only for classroom use), and the structure for consequences and recordkeeping.

"I move to approve the PHS handbook policy on cell phone usage as presented. This policy will go into effect beginning 01/01/2024," said board member Jason Olsberg when making the motion; a second was recorded and the motion carried following voice vote. Board members asked staff to spell out references such as PowerSchool, provide clearer numbering (a, b, c; subpoints 1, 2) and list consequences in a way parents could follow in the published handbook.

Discussion centered on teacher discretion, operational exceptions and student supports. Some board members urged consistency across buildings and warned the policy could spur initial complaints; another member who voted against the motion said the district should continue to offer more support and options for teachers rather than imposing a rigid, across-the-board rule. Administrators said safety and limited exceptions (for emergencies or to use school devices for translation/assistance) would be explained during rollout and training.

The board adopted the updated handbook language, with the expectation the administration will finalize formatting, enumerate consequences, and communicate the change widely before the policy takes effect on Jan. 1.
