Principals present academic spotlights; board approves consent agenda and 2025-26 calendar

The board heard data-driven presentations from three elementary principals and took action on routine business at its Dec. 2 meeting.
Melissa Burgess, principal of Morris Hill Elementary, highlighted enrollment growth after a new facility opened, attendance trending around 95% (goal 96%), and CAP results showing growth in higher levels but persistent numbers in Level 1 for some grades. Burgess described interventions including building- and classroom-level goal setting, writing implementation across the day and MTSS strategies, and explained that discipline referrals over four years show a decline in out-of-school suspensions.
Seitz Elementary (presenter) said staff training in the science of reading is underway with 65% of staff engaged, and the school earned a bronze star for civic engagement. Seitz staff described use of targeted MyPath/iReady time and spaced ("slot") instruction to revisit missed skills.
Veronica Waite, principal of Ware Elementary, reported a focus on engagement, teacher observation ("bear walks"), and a restructuring of WIN time (What I Need) to give every student targeted instruction. Ware identified subgroup performance patterns, noted staffing changes and described an attendance team that narrowed a Tier 3 attendance list to 40 students for targeted outreach.
Following the spotlights, the board approved the consent agenda that included minutes, treasurer's report, activity accounts, bills and personnel items. Trustees also approved payment of $60,804 for a food-service truck to Jim Clark Automotive that had been procured through the bid process and voted to adopt the 2025-26 academic calendar (Option 2), which staff said received about 57% support from the teacher vote (378 teachers participated).
