The board called up Julie Kilmore, a para at Rex Elementary, along with nominator Megan Goble and principal Shane Paulus to receive a staff recognition. The board also recognized a larger Parents as Teachers team led by Emily for earning a Blue Ribbon affiliate endorsement after completing a 17-month quality improvement process overseen by Parents as Teachers National Center.
Emily, director of the Parents as Teachers program, told the board the program’s home-visiting team of seven has completed 538 home visits so far this year and that “we are currently serving 96 families and a 18 children” (transcript wording). She said the program met 74 of 81 quality standards in its review and that this is the second time the district has earned Blue Ribbon recognition.
Student council representative Janette reported on the winter wishes program and other semester activities. Janette said the winter-wishes effort had about 30 recipients this year, including nine teen parents, and that the district distributed Walmart gift cards (fixed amounts) totaling roughly $2,200–$2,500 to support needs such as coats and baby supplies. Janette also described a tutoring program running Dec. 10 and Dec. 12 during seminar time.
Board members and attendees congratulated the Parents as Teachers staff and the students. Emily offered contact information and invited board members or community members to visit the program.
The meeting then moved to action items and routine business.
