Tree advisory board reports successful yard-tree program; council appoints planning and arts members

Gordon Taylor, a member of Monmouth's Tree Advisory Board, reported the board has new members and a functioning quorum after a slow period during the pandemic. He highlighted this year's yard-tree program, saying roughly half the cost was borne by homeowners and half by the city and that volunteers (including local student athletes) assisted with plantings on Arbor Day.

"Half a dozen Monmouth residents applied to get trees... 50 of the cost was borne by the homeowners and 50% by the city," Taylor said, describing the program as successful and noting all trees planted this spring survived the summer heat. He also said a donated tulip poplar is expected to be planted at Madrona Park in the fall.

Councilors asked about maintenance responsibilities; staff and board representatives clarified property owners are responsible for the upkeep of trees planted in front of private property, while the city maintains trees planted in parks. Councilors suggested clearer selection criteria to ensure homeowners are willing to maintain trees and discussed trimming/maintenance needs.

Separately, the council voted by voice to appoint Isaac Weininger to the Planning Commission and Adri Clark to the Arts & Culture Commission; the appointments were confirmed during the meeting.

What happens next: Tree Board will continue yard and park plantings and accept suggestions for planting sites; new appointees will be notified and seated for upcoming planning sessions.
