Smyrna holds second public hearing on 2024 millage rate; no public comment

The Smyrna Mayor and Council held the second of three required public hearings on the proposed 2024 millage rate on July 16, 2024. Finance staff told the council the fiscal year 2025 revenue projections underlying the budget are based on an 8.99 millage rate, and that Cobb Countydata indicate a rollback rate of 8.244 would be required to avoid advertising a tax increase.
"This is the second of 3 required public hearings before the formal adoption of the 8.99 millage rate," Finance staff said, noting the county provided the tax information on June 20, 2024, and that notices had been posted in the Marietta Daily Journal and on the city website.
The presentation included comparative figures: last yearthe rollback rate was calculated at 7.829. The cityposted required notices on July 7 and July 14, 2024, and the next public hearing will be July 22, 2024, at 6 p.m.; the adoption of the millage rate is scheduled for a special called meeting that same evening.
Mayor Derek Norton clarified the cityhas not raised its millage rate for 17 straight years and emphasized that homesteaded properties would not see a city tax increase under the approach presented. No members of the public signed up to speak at the hearing, and the mayor closed the public comment portion without a vote.
The council is scheduled to consider adoption of the millage rate at the July 22, 2024 special-called meeting.
