City staff presented tax information from Cobb County and described rollback calculations that factored into the decision. “For the information provided, the city would need to roll back the millage rate to 8.244 to not advertise a tax increase,” Mr. Bennett, city staff, told the council, adding that the city posted required notices in the Marietta Daily Journal on 07/07/2024 and 07/14/2024 and issued a press release on 07/01/2024. Staff also said this was the third required public hearing and referenced prior hearings on 07/15/2024 at 08:00 a.m. and 07/15/2024 at 6:45 p.m.
The meeting’s presiding official said the body has left the millage rate unchanged for 17 straight years, and “that means that homesteaded properties here in our city don't see a City Of Smyrna tax increase.” The presiding official introduced the agenda item as the public hearing and adoption of a 20.24 millage rate and requested authorization for the mayor to sign related documents. Public comment was limited. One unidentified resident accepted an offer to be sworn in and said, “I just wanted to find out more about it.”
Councilmember Mr. Lindley moved to adopt the rate "as presented," and Councilman Welch seconded. The presiding official called for the vote; the motion carried by an announced tally of 6-0, with Councilman Gould noted as traveling and absent. The presiding official adjourned the meeting at 6:03 p.m.
