LiveSafe Resources honored by Smyrna, announces pet sanctuary and Q & Brew fundraiser

At the Oct. 8 Smyrna City Council meeting, council members presented a proclamation recognizing October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and invited representatives from LiveSafe Resources to speak about services and upcoming fundraising.
Miss Hines read the proclamation and introduced Lisa Mello of LiveSafe Resources. Mello said LiveSafe helped "over 3,200 unique individuals" in 2023, and that "1,900 of them were from Cobb County." She described the organization's Q & Brew Festival at Taylor-Bronner Park on Oct. 18 — a two-day event with barbecue, a silent auction and fundraising to support services for survivors.
Mello announced that LiveSafe is opening a pet sanctuary next month at its emergency shelter location so survivors can bring animals when they seek safety. "About 49 percent of those who are experiencing intimate partner violence will not leave their situation if they cannot bring their furry family members," she said, and added that roughly three-quarters of those cited that their pets had been threatened or harmed.
Mello said LiveSafe provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, counseling, legal advice and a 24-hour crisis line, and noted that the organization has been expanding bilingual services for a growing local population. She urged community support and noted ticket and donation information is available at livesaferesources.org.
Council members thanked LiveSafe and city staff for storm response; no formal vote was required for the proclamation.
