The Bluffdale City Council voted to approve a negotiated agreement with Google Fiber on Dec. 12, 2024, authorizing the company to install fiber infrastructure in the city right‑of‑way under terms negotiated by city staff.
City Attorney Fred Donaldson outlined key terms of the agreement: Google Fiber will follow the city’s permitting, insurance and construction procedures and will pay the city 2% of gross revenues derived from operations in Bluffdale. Donaldson said the agreement is intended to protect public infrastructure while enabling broad broadband access.
A Google Fiber representative said the company plans to complete its engineering and work closely with city staff and hopes to begin construction in the second quarter of the coming year. The company emphasized coordination to minimize neighborhood disruption and named staff (pro‑construction lead Jeff McKay and Angie Willing, general manager for expansion and external affairs) who will be involved in local outreach and construction coordination.
Councilmembers asked about coverage expectations, HOA and easement constraints, and how Google Fiber will handle areas with access challenges. A company representative said Google’s goal is citywide deployment; where physical or legal impediments (private streets, railroads, water districts, HOAs) exist, the company will work with staff and notify council and residents when deployment is infeasible in specific pockets.
Council moved and approved Resolution 2024‑81 to authorize the agreement; the motion carried by roll call.
What it means: Bluffdale residents should expect phased construction and outreach from Google Fiber over the coming months. The city will receive 2% of gross revenue from the service in Bluffdale, and staff will act as the local liaison for rollout and resident inquiries.
