At a Dec. 9 special meeting the Beaumont City Council reorganized its leadership. Following a staff presentation on the council's rules and rotational sequence for selecting mayor and mayor pro tem, council members nominated and voted to appoint Mike Lara as mayor and Jessica Boyd as mayor pro tem.
A council member moved to nominate Mayor Pro Tem Mike Lara to serve as mayor; the motion was seconded and the council approved the nomination by roll-call vote with all members indicating "Yes." Later the council received a nomination to appoint Jessica Boyd as mayor pro tem; the motion was seconded and the vote was unanimous.
Council members discussed procedure briefly at the start of nominations, noting past practice sometimes ratified a predetermined rotational sequence and other times accepted nominations one at a time. Nicole Wheelwright, the city clerk, said the rules and the previous years' rotational sequence were included in the staff report and she offered to answer questions.
The council adjourned the special meeting at 05:09 after taking photographs to mark the leadership transition.
