Beaumont fills planning and economic development committee seats, names Alan Copeland to planning commission

The Beaumont City Council on Dec. 17 reappointed two existing planning commissioners (Cuevas and Southard) to continue their partial terms and selected Alan Copeland for the remaining full planning commission seat.
Council interviewed multiple applicants for the planning commission — including Alan Copeland, Dijon Taylor, Shannon Finley and Ajay/Patrick — who each described their relevant experience, education and community ties. Copeland emphasized his 16 years of experience on commissions and prior development work; councilmembers asked about his approach to conflicts of interest and whether he would cease commercial real-estate work if appointed; Copeland said he would stop doing commercial work in Beaumont if appointed.
After candidate interviews and ranking by councilmembers, a motion to nominate and appoint Alan Copeland to the Planning Commission carried on a unanimous roll call vote.
Council then moved through Economic Development Committee appointments. After discussion of residency and business-member eligibility, council reappointed an incumbent (Marufo) and appointed Dijon Taylor and Ron Raider to EDC business/community seats, and appointed Joe Matthews as a county/workforce representative for the committee. Council also confirmed a number of other liaison and ad hoc committee assignments across boards and interagency bodies.
What comes next: Newly appointed members will assume committee responsibilities per the city’s schedule; staff will follow up on certificate-of-residency and eligibility questions for certain positions, as discussed at the meeting.
