Menands board reviews sidewalk-grinding proposal to address 149 trip hazards on Menand Road and Brookside

The Village of Menands Board of Trustees on July 1 discussed a proposal to grind raised sections of sidewalk on Menand Road and Brookside to reduce trip hazards and defer full panel replacements.

Mayor (unnamed) said the contractor would grind roughly 149 locations to make sidewalks flush, correcting 35 pronounced trip hazards between 1 inch and 2.5 inches of vertical displacement. The mayor gave an estimated cost of $17,747 and said the work would be paid from highway funds. The board will circulate the vendor proposal to trustees for review before deciding whether to place the item on a future agenda for formal approval.

Trustees noted the proposal could strengthen a future grant application by documenting the extent of sidewalk deficiencies. Board members discussed scope and timing — the proposal covers both sides of Menand Road from Broadway to the railroad tracks and the full length of Brookside, with a few panels noted as too thin to be ground and therefore likely requiring replacement.

No binding contract was awarded at the meeting. The mayor said the vendor’s grinding approach is one of the few available methods that avoids wholesale replacement, and the board asked staff to collect additional details on turnaround time, warranty and whether work would be phased to avoid conflicts with village events.

The board also said sidewalk work may be coordinated with other paving and curb repairs and that staff should consider ADA continuity and storm-drain cuts when planning repairs. The item will return for formal action after trustees have reviewed the circulated proposal.
