Lenexa council approves resolution to place 1.375% sales‑tax renewal on April 1, 2025 mail ballot

The Lenexa City Council voted to place a renewal of the city's 1 3/8¢ general‑purpose sales tax on the April 1, 2025 mail ballot.
City staff said the resolution calls for a 20‑year renewal that would commence Oct. 1, 2028 and conclude Sept. 30, 2048. Mike (city staff) told the council the tax was first approved by voters in February 2008 and is the primary funding source for street maintenance, parks improvements and trail construction; staff estimated the renewal would raise about $260,000,000 over the 20‑year term.
"The $3.08 cent sales tax accounts for 20% of that CIP," staff said while describing the CIP funding context and the role of the sales tax in pavement management and parks investments. The staff presentation said the sales tax presently supports about $5–6 million in annual pavement management and that 35–40% of Lenexa sales tax receipts are generated by visitors in any given year.
Council member Courtney moved the resolution and Melanie seconded; the council voted to approve the resolution to notify the county election commissioner and begin the statutory process for a mail‑ballot election. Staff said they plan public informational open houses in February and March and will publish outreach materials at lenexa.com/salestax.
Next steps: staff will coordinate with the county election commissioner on mail‑ballot procedures and begin public education ahead of the April 1, 2025 election.
