At the Dec. 19 meeting, staff and commissioners updated the Shade Tree Commission on ongoing urban-forest planning and outreach. Speaker 5 said urban-forest comprehensive planning continues with steering committee and stakeholder meetings scheduled for late December and mid-January and public outreach planned roughly January through March. The commission flagged outreach that reaches people who do not typically attend meetings, and Speaker 5 said staff are exploring venues such as Euclid High School to engage students and junior ambassadors.
Commissioners described recent technical review and suggested ordinance updates from Davey Resource Group. Speaker 7 said the consultant reviewed city ordinances and proposed changes to protect existing trees during new construction, recommended a priced inventory of trees, and suggested "trouble charges" to increase fines for destruction of public trees. Speaker 6 said the commission will work on Arbor Day planning and hopes to return to a spring plantings model and that the group will present a January Observer article summarizing 2024 accomplishments.
The commission also recorded logistics: a steering committee meeting on Sims Park occurred on the day of the Dec. 19 meeting and commissioners will continue coordination with the Sims Park reimagined process. The commission scheduled a working committee meeting for Jan. 9, and Speaker 1 confirmed the next full Shade Tree Commission meeting on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m.
