The Technical Education Authority approved its consent agenda on Nov. 21 after a motion and roll-call vote that produced unanimous 'yes' votes from present members. The consent agenda included 10 items from the technical program and curriculum committee.
In an informational report, Sharman explained KBOR’s role in distributing state safety fund revenues for commercial driver training (CDL) and motorcycle safety programs. For CDL funds, KBOR requests institutions running approved CDL programs to submit student completion data and the date a CDL license was issued; distributions are then allocated by student headcount. Sharman provided one example: 13.85% of qualifying headcount yielded $8,365 out of available fee funds totaling $60,395. For the motorcycle safety fund, KSDE supplies headcounts and the total available this year was $89,200; distributions are made according to the reported headcounts.
The meeting also featured extensive community and technical college reports. President Seth Carter highlighted local initiatives: Independence Community College’s free-textbook program and Montgomery County scholarships; Johnson County Community College’s $250,000 annual aid commitment for early-college students; and Kansas City Kansas Community College’s downtown $75,000,000 Health and Wellness Center project and a $75,000 private grant to fund machine assembler apprentices. Technical college updates included a $672,000 Patterson Family Foundation grant to Flint Hills Tech for precision agriculture and CDL supports, and North Central Tech’s groundbreaking for a new 29,000-square-foot training facility in Hays to expand construction and trades capacity.
Chair Frederick noted the meeting’s business had been productive and reminded members the next TEA meeting is Dec. 19 at 1:30 p.m. by Zoom.
