Owensboro manager outlines $33 million 'Operation Firehouse' plan; ordinance to close alley read on first reading

City Manager (speaker identified in the meeting packet) told the Oct. 15 Owensboro City Commission that 'Operation Firehouse' is a plan to spend an estimated $33,000,000 on new and expanded fire facilities over the next several years including replacement and enlargement of Station 1.
As part of first reading of Ordinance 16-2024, the city read language to close portions of alley rights-of-way between properties on West Ninth Street, Cedar Street and Locust Street. The manager said the closed alley allows the city to consolidate contiguous properties south of the current Station 1 to reorient and enlarge the new facility; the exhibit shown to the commission indicated a narrow alley to be closed to accommodate the design.
The ordinance was publicly read on first reading; no final vote was taken at this meeting. The manager said the project is currently in design and that the city owns the adjoining properties that make consolidation possible. Commissioners asked clarifying questions but took no final action on the ordinance at the first reading.
If the closure and design advance, future actions will include subsequent ordinance readings, design approvals and capital funding steps to move construction forward.
