Board staff provided an update on math pathways and English initiatives, and detailed how those efforts fit into the AY 2024–26 project-based performance agreements.
Deb von Trappi said the Board approved the math-pathways policy in May 2023 and institutions have since revised gateway math learning outcomes, selected appropriate gateway courses and developed placement measures for all gateway courses. Fall efforts focused on professional development; staff reported "over 1,200 individuals" participated in fall sessions. The board established Executive Implementation Teams to support campus implementation and paired Kansas experts with national experts for training and support.
Staff outlined next steps: a January math faculty professional development session, spring task force meetings, a March 28 EIT meeting to prepare institutions for performance-agreement submissions, and a data conference focused on program assessment. Performance agreements require institutions to offer at least one section of each gateway course and co-requisite support, soft-launch placement measures, and update degree maps ahead of fall 2026 full implementation.
Regents asked whether targets and SMART metrics exist; staff said many institutions already have co-requisite models and that available data will inform baseline measures and targets for subsequent tracking. Board staff emphasized the work will be collaborative and noted peer-support options where institutions with more advanced implementation will assist others.
The committee was told English initiatives follow a similar approach with professional development concluding in early April and placement measures already approved for English gateway courses.
