Recycling Director Angie Munsey told the Boyle County Fiscal Court on Sept. 24 that recent county collection events for tires and household hazardous waste were successful but that the HHW event exceeded its grant by about $18,114.49.
Munsey provided itemized volumes: roughly 12.94 tons of paint collected, more than 6 tons of flammable liquids, about 1 ton of pesticides, over 300 fluorescent bulbs, and more than 2 tons of batteries (including lithium). She said two-and-a-half tractor-trailer loads went out after the event and that some mercury was collected.
Munsey said the state division of waste typically does not penalize jurisdictions for exceeding grant allocations and that she has informed the state of the overage and is awaiting a response. She also described the tire event as larger than prior efforts (she estimated roughly 30,000 tires processed across events but said an exact count will take months to confirm).
The court discussed frequency of events (HHW remains an annual event while tire collections are on a three-year cycle) and logistics; county staff said lists of regional collection options are available from the clerk’s office for residents. Munsey thanked partnering entities and noted volunteer and correctional-facility assistance used at the event.
The court did not take additional fiscal action at the meeting specifically to cover the HHW overage and awaits state guidance.
