A Select Board member presented a warrant-article proposal Oct. 28 to increase Candia’s elderly property-tax exemption brackets by $10,000 per tier to help offset inflation-related increases in property tax burden. The board voted to support placing the article on the town warrant.
The presenter said the current brackets — $45,000 for ages 65–75, $70,000 for ages 75–80 and $90,000 for ages over 80 — would each rise by $10,000 (to $55,000, $80,000 and $100,000 respectively). He estimated 67 residents claim the exemption and that the total exempt valuation would increase by about $670,000, producing roughly $14,000 in lost tax revenue (about a one‑tenth of 1% impact on the tax rate).
Board members noted the exemption is means‑tested — not all residents 65 and older qualify — and discussed timing ahead of the Nov. 15 warrant-article deadline. One board member said the last major change to the brackets was in 2019/2020. The proponent moved that the board support the warrant article; the motion was seconded and the board voted to support placing the article on the warrant.
The board did not finalize article numbering at the meeting. The Select Board will publish the finalized warrant language and number and will include the proposal in the town warrant materials ahead of the annual deliberative session.
