Selectmen hear solid-waste update: tonnages up, revenue rising and recycling bail pilot proposed

Reported figures included total-waste tonnages (figures compared conversationally to 2023) and an increase in year-to-date revenue to approximately $74,321 for 2024 compared with about $59,008 in 2023. Staff described accumulated bags of paper and a plan to attempt baling roughly 1,000 pounds as a test to determine the feasibility and potential revenue from resale, noting storage and bailer-capacity concerns.
The board discussed whether the revenue from recycling should go into the general fund or a dedicated revolving fund/trust; staff explained accounting timing issues can make year-to-year comparisons difficult when delivery and payments span calendar years. No policy change or specific budget transfer was enacted at the meeting; staff agreed to report back with more details if the bailing test proceeds.
