Florence County SD3 reports slide in student progress, sets targets for math and reading growth

District instructional leaders presented report-card comparisons and improvement targets during the Dec. 19 board meeting, describing where the district’s scores declined and what the district intends to do to raise proficiency.
'Miss McNich' reviewed three years of data and said the district saw a drop in student progress from 2023 to 2024, noting the district remained 'average' in some categories but listed unsatisfactory results for parent participation and specific subgroups. She told trustees the district has identified 14 students in the target disabled population and said interventions aim to raise that group's performance from roughly 13.6% to about 30.79% by the stated goal year. "We have 14 students right now total in that population," she said.
Staff described intervention steps including weekly checks of learning platforms (DreamBox and Lexia), targeted small-group instruction, expanded after-school programming and teacher-led conferences to monitor growth. Presenters said some students are close to target thresholds and that breaking larger intervention groups into smaller cohorts will allow more focused instruction.
A district presenter also reported the district pulled enrollment data on Dec. 6 and was down 202 students compared with the same date in the prior year. The presenters said proposed state voucher legislation is expected to affect enrollment and that the district’s delegates will provide updates in January.
Trustees asked for clarification on target counts and how parent engagement was achieved; leaders described outreach through school invitations, social media and in-person meetings to explain surveys and encourage participation. Directors said they would return with specific target-student counts and additional detail at a subsequent meeting.
The board did not take a vote on instructional goals at the meeting; the instructional material presented will be reviewed and a vote on some items is expected in January.
