Davenport Parks & Recreation staff presented a light‑hearted, game‑show style year‑end review at the advisory board’s December meeting, using trivia rounds to highlight 2024 accomplishments, program metrics and completed projects.
The presentation said 2024 program registrations exceeded pre‑COVID levels and that the department recorded 7,562 new RecDesk members after migrating from its old registration system. Staff also reported they hung approximately 81,375 feet of holiday lights across several sites and completed dozens of playground projects including upgrades at parks highlighted during the presentation.
The conservatory drew attention: staff said visitor counts for the year exceeded 40,000 as of Dec. 12, 2024, with the busiest single day recorded Dec. 7 (571 visitors) and the slowest day Jan. 9 (three visitors). Staff advised extended evening hours for the conservatory would end the final scheduled night of extended hours the weekend following the meeting.
Other figures presented included about 1,680 youth soccer registrations (roughly 850 in spring and 830 in fall), 624 playground inspections performed in 2024 across 52 playgrounds, six indoor recreation facilities hosting year‑round programs and 375 acres maintained by the golf maintenance team. Presenters framed these statistics as part of a larger narrative that the department is increasing participation and maintaining a high level of service across facilities and programs.
Staff used short promotional videos produced for social media and cable distribution to illustrate marketing efforts and noted some commercials were created in partnership with local media providers. The department said it will produce an annual report in July covering fiscal year 2025 that will include year‑over‑year comparisons of the metrics presented.
Votes at a glance: The board approved the Nov. 21 meeting minutes by voice vote during the meeting. A motion to adjourn the December meeting passed by voice vote at the close of the agenda.
The advisory board asked staff to share the presentation slides and underlying statistics; staff agreed to distribute the materials after the meeting. The board also discussed switching from a biannual recreation catalog to an annual recreation magazine that will describe program types and direct readers to the website for session dates and registration details.
Looking ahead, staff emphasized continued partnerships across city departments and noted several completed and upcoming projects that will be included in the planned annual report.
