Public commenter presses Martinez Unified board for update on self-evaluation

A community member urged the Martinez Unified board to publish an action plan following an Aug. 12 review of the board’s self-evaluation, saying no update has been provided and urging the board to act before the next meeting.
At the Oct. 14 Martinez Unified School District Board meeting, public commenter Todd Navarro asked the board to publish an update and action plan following a special Aug. 12 meeting that reviewed the board’s self-evaluation.
"To date, no update nor action plan have been shared with the public," Navarro said, adding that he had "personal concerns around the board's lack of ability to function as a cohesive unit while respecting core expectations, such as confidentiality, providing direction to the superintendent only during board meetings, or treating the superintendent with respect." Navarro asked who was responsible for next steps — the board president, superintendent or assistant superintendent — and said an update should appear on the next board agenda.
A member of the board responded that an update should appear on the next agenda and that a report would be forthcoming. The exchange was recorded as part of the public-comment portion of the meeting; Navarro asked the board to take a leadership role in moving the matter forward for the benefit of students and constituents.
