Martinez Unified board approves two expulsions, adopts textbook sufficiency resolution and routine items

The board announced the results of closed‑session actions on two student discipline matters, approving the recommended stipulated expulsion for student number 2024‑25‑01 and the recommended suspended stipulated expulsion for student number 2024‑25‑02. Roll call aloud by the clerk recorded votes by board members Melendez, Brugger, Horak Martin and Yamas; both motions passed unanimously.
Also on the consent and action agenda, the board adopted Resolution 2025‑06 declaring the district has sufficient textbooks and instructional materials as required by the Education Code. "This is something that we do every year, which is required by Ed Code," Amy Espinosa told the board before the resolution was adopted unanimously.
The board approved a salary increase for instructors in the Martinez Adult Education/Contra Costa electrical joint apprenticeship program. Assistant Superintendent Janelle Ayatt asked the board to approve raising the hourly rate to $71.17, effective Sept. 1, 2024; the motion passed with the assent of the board.
The board also approved a notice of completion for the John Swett Elementary School campus replacement and renovation project. Assistant Superintendent Andy Cannon said the project came in roughly $75,000 under budget and noted that remaining warranty and drainage issues will be handled under the two‑year maintenance period. The board approved the notice of completion unanimously.
District staff presented routine CSBA policy updates and adopted Title IX and related complaint‑procedure updates brought forward by Superintendent Helen Rossi. The board approved a local assignment option resolution (Resolution 2025‑07) to authorize a teacher to cover a newly opened high‑school geometry section under Ed Code 44263 and approved the district and CSEA sunshine proposals to begin successor collective bargaining negotiations.
