Mayor Robert E. Scott on opened the council meeting by proclaiming Sioux City a Purple Heart City and accepting a presentation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Department of Iowa. The proclamation recounted the Purple Heart’s origins under George Washington and noted the medal is awarded to U.S. service members wounded or killed in action.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart’s presenter said the organization “bestows with pride” the special recognition to the city and to Mayor Scott in honor of honoring America’s combat-wounded veterans. Scott said the city will display the recognition “in City Hall with a lot of pride.”
The proclamation was made during the meeting’s opening sequence and was accompanied by brief comments from veterans’ representatives. No formal council vote on the proclamation was recorded beyond the mayor’s presentation; the mayor and staff said they will display the plaque in City Hall.
The presentation was part of the meeting’s ceremonial opening and did not carry further policy action; council proceeded to regular business afterward.
