Christie France, executive director of Explore Siouxland, told the Sioux City Council the organization recorded its highest hotel‑motel tax collections on record and is seeing early strength in fiscal‑year 2025 receipts. "Last year our hotel motel tax collection was the highest on record at 2,843,000," France said, and she reported first‑quarter FY25 collections of about $1,400,000.
France said events supported or co‑sponsored by Explore Siouxland generated an estimated $50,000,000 in total economic impact across the greater Siouxland area, up from roughly $35,000,000 the prior year. She described recent marketing work, a new video and photo shoot, a rebrand intended to increase regional participation, the addition of new hotel partners and trade‑show activity that generated leads: "We've done 13 site visits from those RFPs that we've sent out," she said.
Council members asked how Explore Siouxland measures return on investment. France said the office subscribes to Destinations International's economic impact calculator, which provides breakdowns of visitor origin and estimated spending, and she pointed to occupancy reports from hotel partners as a local indicator of success: "Our hotel partners are very happy with what we're doing — their occupancy reports are going up," she said.
Councilors also pressed on a practical constraint: airport flight capacity. France said limited flights make hosting larger events harder and that Explore Siouxland sometimes coordinates ground transportation from nearby airports to bring attendees into Sioux City. "One of the biggest hurdles is just the capacity for flights and the number of flights," she said.
On budgeting and next steps, France confirmed the annual allocation for the bureau will appear on an upcoming council agenda for consideration. A one‑year memorandum of understanding for the funding must be reaffirmed annually, a council member noted. France also said a major announcement is pending state approval and will be shared when allowed.
The presentation included questions from council members about metrics and suggested areas for improvement; councilors generally praised the bureau's recent work and rebranding efforts. The council will consider the bureau's budget/invoice at a future meeting.
