At the Nov. 18 meeting of the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District board, student leaders from Unionville High School outlined spring and winter activities focused on community service and school spirit.
Student Council President Anna Nam said the council reorganized into committees this year to increase participation. Diana, the canned-food-drive lead, said the drive will collect donations for the Kennett Area Food Cupboard with a target donation date of Nov. 26. "Students can only attend the student versus staff volleyball game if their 8th-period class collects 40 or more cans," she said, describing the board-approved incentive planned for Nov. 27.
Fiona Avondolio, who serves as USAC president, described a district athletics leadership group that runs the yearly SVs awards and is organizing a winter toy-drive competition among winter sports teams. "We're going to have [wrestling, basketball, winter cheer, swimming, rowing and track] compete to see who can collect the most toys," she said.
Megan, who spoke for YouthOn and Longhorn Life Council, summarized fundraising and outreach plans, including a main April mini-thon, partnerships with the Chadds Ford PTO on babysitting nights, and a $100,000 fundraising goal for YouthOn. She also described Longhorn Life Council’s monthly meetings with school administrators, which provide students a regular forum to give feedback on events and activities.
The district superintendent and several board members thanked the students for their presentations and for promoting leadership, kindness and community engagement. The student board representative, Kushi, also reported districtwide events, upcoming concerts and student-led conferences, and recognized the passing of Unionville High School baseball coach Dan Urdoneta.
The board’s acknowledgment of student presentations rounded out an evening that also included routine votes and several district policy and capital decisions.
