Unionville‑Chadds Ford School District board members on Aug. 19 approved a package of routine business and a slate of curriculum, facilities and personnel items ahead of the new school year.
The board unanimously approved the bundled routine items — meeting minutes and the bill list — and then ratified several curriculum actions. The board ratified an annual agreement with the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) to continue online schooling through BVA (42 students participated last year, and at least 25 students were already signed up for the coming year), set Unionville High School’s graduation for Wednesday, June 4, 2025, and approved ninth‑ and twelfth‑grade English texts recommended by teacher‑leader Amy Aheart. The district also approved Extended School Year (ESY) programming for June 23–July 31, 2025, with July 3 observed as a holiday.
Facilities and finance decisions included ratifying construction change orders for 2024 summer projects and approving the purchase of a scissor lift for maintenance and marching‑band work at $14,900. The board also approved an agreement between the district and Chester Water Authority, and it voted to exonerate $2,274.35 in 2015 taxes for a Chadds Ford Township property at 1381 Baltimore Pike that the township purchased after tax bills were issued.
On personnel, the board approved a bundled set of hires and contract actions. Dr. Hoffman described creation of a half‑time special‑education long‑term substitute (to be combined with an existing half‑time contract position at Unionville Elementary for the year) to fill a staffing gap. He said Title II grant funds will be reallocated to cover the one‑time cost for this position.
Other informational items included an update on a proposed Spanish department immersion trip to Peru (a June/July trip estimated at about $5,049 per person) and the district’s AI committee work to set in‑class expectations and teacher training while using closed, proprietary systems intended to protect student data.
The board closed with reports from the Chester County Intermediate Unit and a legislative update noting that Senate Bill 700 was enacted as part of Act 55, which requires districts to have at least one full‑time school security personnel and mandatory training for those positions. District staff said UCFSD believes it is in compliance with those requirements.
The board’s next regularly scheduled meeting is Sept. 9.
