Unionville High proposes summer Spanish immersion and service trip to Peru

Unionville High School’s world-language team and teacher Cindy Pesaro presented a proposed Spanish immersion and service trip to Peru, scheduled for July 20–28, 2025, that the district plans to bring to the full board for a vote next Monday. Pesaro said the program, run through Education First (EF) Tours, combines language classes and cultural activities with a service component such as building a community garden.
Pesaro said the trip focuses on sites in the former Incan heartland, with Cusco as a base, and that students would gain “authentic” Spanish practice and firsthand context for cultural comparisons required on the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam. "It also speaks to Unionville's Portrait of a Graduate," Pesaro said, arguing travel can broaden students’ cultural understanding.
Mister Audubard told the committee the district would target students at least at Spanish level 3 who are committed to the program through upper-level coursework; he said the proposed cost is $5,049 per person and that the trip package includes the provider’s travel insurance. The district plans to begin student outreach in September.
No formal board vote was taken at the CIT meeting; Mister Audubard said the trip will be presented as a voting item to the full board at the next scheduled meeting. If approved, the district will publish sign-up and payment procedures through school communications.
