The Traffic Commission heard a request under old business for a designated handicap parking space across from 70 Warren Avenue. David Keating, who identified himself as representing the Woburn Housing Authority, told the commission the site has 17 parking spaces for about 40 residents and that spaces currently are assigned to residents. "Technically, all of our residents that park there are handicapped," Keating said, adding the courtyard is not for parking because it must remain clear for police and fire access.
Commissioners asked whether the housing authority had consulted the building commissioner or the Commission on Disability for ADA compliance. Keating said Tim Donovan from the city had reached out with recommendations and the housing authority would comply with necessary changes. Commissioners noted that if a curbside handicap space were created on a public street it could not be assigned to a single resident; it would be available to any qualified user.
Given limited on-site parking and assigned spots, the housing authority said it may offer to relocate the petitioner to another unit with parking. After discussion, the commission voted to place the matter on file and encouraged the petitioner to coordinate with the housing authority and relevant city offices for further action.
