County approves replacement servers and new intrusion detection system to address aging IT infrastructure

Robert Slovak, the county’s director of information technology, told the Board of Supervisors on Feb. 3 that key county IT systems are running on servers purchased as early as 2008 and 2012 and that the equipment has exceeded its expected lifecycle. Slovak said the virtual host servers (hardware and accompanying VMware software) risk data loss if they fail and recommended replacement using state contract vendors. The board moved and approved the purchase on a roll call vote.
Slovak also presented a proposal to replace the county building intrusion detection/alarm system, explaining the original vendor is no longer in business and replacement hardware is unavailable for key components. The proposed IDS would integrate with the county’s Genetec access control platform, allow card‑based control of alarms, and include installation and programming. The purchase was approved by roll call.
Supervisors expressed support for replacing aging infrastructure to reduce operational risk. Slovak said the county will manage installation and programming of the IDS and will purchase the servers under state contract pricing.
