Champaign Township board discusses bringing homeless shelter levy back to the ballot, may need rapid timetable

Members of the Champaign Township board signaled on Dec. 3 that they want to pursue returning a previously failed levy for the Strides homeless shelter to the ballot, and discussed the timeline for doing so.
Town board member Beck said the shelter is a life-saving community service and called for permanent funding outside of ad hoc city donations. Beck and other board members argued that placing a levy on the April ballot would be the best path forward and urged more community education ahead of another referendum.
The Township Supervisor said a spring referendum is possible but asked the board for direction while noting uncertainty about exact deadlines. The clerk noted some items require posting (30 days was discussed) and that the ordinance could be prepared for a Dec. 17 special meeting or the regular January meeting depending on statute. The supervisor said staff would research deadlines and report back the next day.
