Champaign Township approves 2024 property tax levy and agreement to fund asylum-seeker services

The Champaign Township board held a public hearing Dec. 17 and moved to approve its estimated 2024 property tax levy after brief public comment and a roll-call vote. Residents Martel Miller and James Corbin urged the board to back the levy to fund services including support for people experiencing homelessness; both described increased local need and asked the board to push the measure through the community.

Chairperson Feynon moved to approve "ordinance 2024-1201" (the 2024 township tax levy). The board closed the public hearing before calling the motion for a vote. The roll call recorded the ordinance as passing (the transcript records an 8-to-0 passage at the township roll call).

The board also moved to place on file Resolution 2024-1202, authorizing the township to enter a subrecipient agreement with the City of Champaign to accept funds "related to supporting municipality for asylum seekers services." Both measures were presented as routine items in compliance with Illinois' truth-in-taxation requirements; the notice for the levy was published in the News-Gazette and placed on file at the Champaign Public Library and the township website per state rules. The board concluded township business and adjourned into the scheduled City of Champaign Council meeting.
