Traffic commission approves school-style warning signs in principle for proposed Mishawam Road day care

Larry Beals of Beals Associates presented the commission with a plan to convert a former restaurant at 286 Mishawam Road into a BrightPath Child Care facility. He said the city council's special permit included a condition that warning signage be placed on Mishawam Road to alert drivers that young children will be present and drop-offs will occur at the rear entrance.
DPW comments read into the record by staff noted that the proposed street signs will require a field review and possibly a MassDOT permit; the DPW asked that the petitioner mark the proposed locations on the ground with the exact sign language and sizes. Commissioners observed that utility poles are owned by utility companies (Eversource/Verizon) and typically disallow attachment of traffic signs, so signposts or stanchions may be required and the petitioner should get permission from the pole owner if pole-mounting is proposed.
Given those constraints, a commissioner moved to approve the requested signage in principle but not to approve the final locations. The motion passed. The commission asked the petitioner to coordinate with DPW superintendent Jay Duran, secure any necessary permission from pole owners, and return with final locations and any required MassDOT guidance for a final sign-off.
The commission did not order any immediate city-funded installation; final placement and any needed permits will be resolved after the petitioner’s site work and DPW review.
