Board approves multiple curriculum and discipline policies on first reading

The Tredyffrin-Easttown School Board on Oct. 28 approved several policies on first reading and scheduled them for final adoption at a future regular meeting. The slate included Policy 1300 (volunteers), Policy 1410 (surveys and educational research by outside entities), Policy 5116 (nonresident student enrollment eligibility), Policy 5401 (student discipline), and Policy 6130 (curriculum) alongside repeal of several older curriculum-related policies.
Susan Audrain, chair of the policy committee, said the expanded curriculum policy is intended to incorporate the districtphilosophy of education, selection criteria for materials, parents' rights to review materials and a clear procedure for raising concerns about curriculum resources. "So we expanded this policy, that really incorporates the philosophy of education for the district, the criteria that, for the selection of the material, as well as, the parents' rights to review any material, and the steps to follow to address any, concerns regarding that material," Audrain said.
The motion to accept the listed policies as ready for adoption was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote; the meeting transcript records the chair saying "Motion passes" but does not provide a roll-call vote tally in the published record.
The board will present these policies for formal adoption at a subsequent regular meeting after the required notice and first-reading period.
