The Woburn City Council’s Aug. 20 meeting covered a broad agenda of zoning petitions, capital requests and committee reports.
On motions and referrals: the council adopted an order authorizing the mayor to accept custody and control of the Wyman School property. It introduced an order to appropriate $30,000,000 for reconstruction of Fire Station 45 and to authorize borrowing; that order was referred to the Committee on Finance for additional review. The council likewise referred the FY2025 school capital budget transfer of $850,000 from a stabilization fund to committee review on finance.
Several new petitions were referred to public hearings or committees: Manganaro Northeast LLC (11 State Street) and Bond Brothers Inc. (22 North Maple Street) were both referred to public hearings for special permits addressing overnight commercial vehicle parking, storage containers and nonconforming uses. Hannaford & Dumas Corporation (24–26 Conne Street) requested a continuance to October after discovery of an activity‑and‑use limitation tied to historical tannery operations.
The council opened multiple public hearings and continued or referred items to committees where department reviews are pending. Notable continuances included 0 Walnut Street (25 Everett Street Realty Trust), 335 Washington Street (childcare proposal), and Campbell & Main Street LLC (477 Main) — each set for further committee consideration with targeted return dates.
Committee reports adopted included amendments to municipal code on ambulance service rates and an order to post and advertise the city engineer position. The council received the July parking clerk report and referred an appointment to the Woburn Housing Authority to the personnel committee.
On events and special permits: the council amended a special‑event permit (SCI Woburn summer concert series) to add a rain date and referred a Friends of Hospice road‑race waiver of liability request to the Public Safety and License Committee.
The meeting concluded after a brief recess and a motion to adjourn at 9:56 p.m.
