Commission approves stop sign at Burlington/Brandt after resident testimony; asks solicitor about tree removal

Residents told the Traffic Commission on Oct. 17 that sightlines at the multi-leg Burlington/Brandt/Thistle intersection are dangerous and that motorists sometimes have to advance past the stop line to see oncoming traffic. Petitioner Sharon Flynn described a near-miss incident and urged action.
"There's a lot going on there," Alderman Jeff Dillon said, supporting a physical fix and suggesting removal of two trees that he said have heaved the sidewalk and obstruct the view. Dillon said earlier DPW work on similar tree problems had restored visibility.
Commissioners agreed the intersection posed safety concerns. A motion to install a stop sign in the southerly direction at Brandt Drive (to give drivers exiting Thistle a clearer control point) passed by voice vote. Separately, the commission voted to send a communication to the city solicitor to clarify legal procedures and timelines for tree removal and to consider whether an expedited safety-based removal is possible.
The stop sign will require a second hearing under the commission’s procedure before final council action; the solicitor communication is intended to establish whether tree-removal steps can be accelerated for public-safety reasons.
