Council grants continuances for Auto Works spray booth petition and nuisance matter; safety concerns raised

The council granted a continuance for Auto Works Inc. to return on Dec. 17 with further information about alternative spray-booth equipment and mitigation measures for a request to remove an existing condition prohibiting spray booths at 921 Main Street. Attorney James Giuliano told the council the petitioner had been researching alternative machinery and expected to present an expert at the next hearing.
Several councilors expressed strong reservations about allowing spray booths in a dense, mixed residential area, citing potential airborne emissions from clear coats and the difficulty of fully suppressing aerosols even with advanced filtration. Councilors noted surrounding uses — day cares, elderly housing and schools — and signaled a preference for locating paint-spray activities in industrial areas if feasible.
Separately, the council kept a public-nuisance hearing for property on Formalwood Terrace open, after an inspector reported cleanup progress and neighbors indicated improvements. The council asked for a formal report from the fire/inspector to be presented at the next meeting.
